KING’S COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE WEDDING – KATE AND TOM

Cambridge is a fantastic place to choose for a wedding, famous for its quaint streets, impressive architecture and one of the most prestigious universities in England.  What better place to choose for a wedding.  This is no doubt what Kate and Tom thought when they chose the spectacular King’s College to host their winter wedding.  Though just days before Christmas day, the air was fresh and the skies were as blue and cloudless as any summer day. Just perfect for a winter wedding.

The excitement before the wedding

Kate’s parents and siblings had flown from their home in Bulgaria to see her marry Tom in one of Cambridge’s most sought after wedding venues.  While her dad was practising his father of the bride speech, Kate’s sister was at her side in the bridal suite, helping to get everyone ready for the big day.  The morning was full of excitement, with joy, laughter and hugs aplenty. Kate even managed to read Tom’s thoughtful and romantic letter without ruining her makeup.   In her simple yet elegant white dress and sparkly golden Jimmy Choo shoes, Kate looked stunning and perfectly attired for a Christmas wedding.

Tom carried on the Christmas theme with a brilliant red tie to complement his traditional morning suit.  Having got ready in plenty of time, the groom and his groomsmen had time for relaxing drink in the Eagle pub before heading to the venue.

Couple portraits

Winter weddings are wonderful, and I am lucky enough to shoot many winter weddings every year.   Like many people, I love this time of year.  The air might be crisp, but the atmosphere is fantastic.  However, winter weddings are not without their challenges.  The sun sets pretty early in the winter, and with the timing of the ceremony, this often means less time for portraits.  Having an awesome venue like the King’s College Cambridge means you have some fantastic interiors to choose from once the sun has gone down.  However, a winter wedding doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the outdoor beauty of your venue.  During their prewedding consultation, I spoke to Kate and Tom about the best way to get some couple portraits in the stunning King’s College grounds.  Just before the ceremony, we had a “first look” where Tom got to greet his bride and have a few quick portraits together.

The ceremony

King’s College is famous for its iconic architecture, and the towering gothic chapel is one of the finest the UK has to offer.  It would be hard not to be wowed by the chapel’s stained glass windows and ornate features, but as Kate walked in, all eyes were on her.  The ceremony was beautiful and, a few happy tears escaped the guests as the couple said their I do’s.   With the light outside gone, we found the perfect location for the formal photos, before heading to the grand Hall for their reception.

The reception

I love shooting weddings at the King’s College because every part of this wedding venue takes your breath away with its grandeur. The Hall is no exception, but as Kate and Tom were having a Christmas wedding, they tastefully decorated the dramatic ceilings with twinkling lights and cascading flurries of snowflakes.

The guests continued to be amazed as Kate and Tom surprised them all, twirling effortlessly through their first dance.  I was so impressed I was sure they should be on Strictly.

With one final surprise in store, the couple chose a sparkler exit to finish off their magical winter wedding.

I couldn’t pick my favourite part of this wedding as the whole day was awesome and I had so much fun capturing it.   If you’re planning a winter wedding whether it’s at the King’s College or another venue, get in touch, I’d love to chat about your plans.
